    Australian Government Bureau of Meteorology TOP PRIORITY FOR IMMEDIATE BROADCAST Severe Weather Warning for Damaging Winds for parts of East Gippsland, North East, West and South Gippsland and Central Forecast Districts. Issued at 8:25 pm Tuesday, 30 May 2023. Damaging wind gusts expected in eastern parts of the state from Wednesday evening. Weather Situation A strong west to northwesterly flow will develop over the east of the state ahead of an approaching cold front on Wednesday evening. The cold front reaches the southwest coast by late Wednesday evening, and moves eastwards across southern parts during early Thursday, before progressing into the Tasman Sea later by midday. DAMAGING WINDS for the following areas: Central, East Gippsland, North East and West and South Gippsland Strong west to northwesterly winds averaging 50 to 60 km/h with DAMAGING WIND GUSTS of around 90 km/h are likely to develop over the eastern ranges during late Wednesday evening. Isolated DAMAGING WIND GUSTS of around 90 km/h are also possible over parts of Central, and West and South Gippsland Districts during later Wednesday and early Thursday morning. DAMAGING WIND GUSTS to around 100km/h are possible over higher elevations above 1200 m early on Thursday morning. Winds are expected to drop below warning thresholds over Central District and West and South Gippsland before sunrise on Thursday, and ease over Alpine areas from the west throughout Thursday morning. Locations which may be affected include Wonthaggi, Mt Baw Baw, Falls Creek, Mt Hotham, Mt Buller and Omeo. The State Emergency Service advises that people should: * If driving conditions are dangerous, safely pull over away from trees, drains, low-lying areas and floodwater. Avoid travel if possible. * Stay safe by avoiding dangerous hazards, such as floodwater, mud, debris, damaged roads and fallen trees. * Be aware - heat, fire or recent storms may make trees unstable and more likely to fall when it's windy or wet. * Check that loose items, such as outdoor settings, umbrellas and trampolines are safely secured. Move vehicles under cover or away from trees. * Stay indoors and away from windows. * If outdoors, move to a safe place indoors. Stay away from trees, drains, gutters, creeks and waterways. * Stay away from fallen powerlines - always assume they are live. * Be aware that in fire affected areas, rainfall run-off into waterways may contain debris such as ash, soil, trees and rocks. Heavy rainfall may also increase the potential for landslides and debris across roads. * Stay informed: Monitor weather warnings, forecasts and river levels at the Bureau of Meteorology website, and warnings through VicEmergency website/app/hotline. Issued at 5:11 pm Tuesday, 30 May 2023. Damaging wind gusts are possible in the northeast from Wednesday evening. Weather Situation A strong west to northwesterly flow will develop ahead of an approaching cold front, which slowly moves over the state during Wednesday afternoon and evening and reaches the far northeast by early Thursday morning. The front then continues to progress further into Bass Strait and the Tasman Sea before sunrise on Thursday. DAMAGING WINDS for the following areas: Furneaux Islands, North East and East Coast Strong winds averaging 50 to 60 km/h with DAMAGING WIND GUSTS of around 100 km/h possible over parts of the North East and East Coast districts, and the Furneaux Islands during Wednesday evening and early Thursday morning, more likely about higher ground. Winds are expected to drop below warning thresholds during early Thursday morning, as the front moves away to the northeast. Locations which may be affected include Scottsdale, Whitemark, Bridport, St Helens, Fingal and Scamander. The State Emergency Service advises that people should: * Supervise children closely. * Check that family and neighbours are aware of warnings. * Manage pets and livestock. * Secure outdoor items including furniture and play equipment. * Be prepared in case of power outages and report any outages to TasNetworks on 132 004. * Beware of damaged trees and power lines and take care when driving. * Listen to the ABC radio or check www.ses.tas.gov.au for further advice. * For emergency assistance contact the SES on 132500. Flood Watch Number: 1 Minor flooding is possible along the Huon, Lower Derwent and North Esk Rivers. A westerly airstream is forecast to bring showers to western Tasmania for the remainder of Tuesday and during Wednesday. The passage of a cold front on Wednesday evening is likely to result in showers in the north. Catchments in the west and northeast are moderately wet following rainfall over recent weeks. Widespread rainfall totals of up to 40-60 mm are possible for the Lower Derwent, Huon and North Esk River catchments for the remainder of Tuesday and during Wednesday. Forecast rainfall may result in river level rises during Wednesday, with minor flooding possible from Wednesday evening.
